Roller derby action hits Albuquerque this weekend as the top two women’s leagues in New Mexico will meet under the hot June sun.
On Saturday June 20, Duke City Roller Derby hosts the second of 5 home games this season. At 11:15 am the DCRD Marionettes, the league’s junior team, face-off against each other in a Black vs Silver game. Ages 9 to 17, the junior skaters embody athleticism and teamwork.
DCRD’s All-Star team, The Muñecas Muertas, match up against the Crossroads City Derby Sucias from Las Cruces at 1:00 pm. Cheer on your hometown team at the Heights Community Center, 823 Buena Vista, Albuquerque. Doors open for the outdoor venue at 11:00 am. This event is family-friendly, and fun for all ages. A $5.00 donation is suggested for entry.
A number of local vendors will have items for sale at the doubleheader. The league’s junior team, The Marionettes, will also have baked goods available for purchase to benefit the junior derby program. Fans will have the opportunity to purchase tickets to the June 27 Pancake Breakfast fundraiser which will be held at the Applebee’s located at 10600 Lomas Boulevard NE.
The Rape Crisis Center of Central New Mexico is the featured charity for this event. The RCCCNM provides emotional support and advocacy to survivors of sexual assault and abuse throughout Central New Mexico, and serves as a community resource on issues regarding prevention and awareness of sexual assault and abuse.
The Muñecas’ roster will feature a number of recognizable skaters including Death Ro, Doom Dee Doom, and Killer Queen. The Muñecas last played Las Cruces in March 2014 when they lost 158-136. “I feel like our team has really improved this year, and I feel like we have been working on a lot of the right things as a team,” said team Captain Kell’s Inferno. Since that game, there have been a number of additions to the roster including B. Tona Brat, Fighting Girlfriend, and transfer Leigh Featherstone.
