What We've Been Up To...

May was a busy month for Duke City Roller Derby. The month kicked-off with a roar as the league started operating under a new nonprofit business license. DCRD was also highlighted as the May 2015 Featured League by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.

Our All-Star travel team, the Muñecas Muertes (WFTDA #135; FTS #121 in WFTDA), traveled to Loveland, Colorado for the annual Mayday Mayhem tournament. In the seeding round, the Muñecas defeated each FoCo Girls Gone Derby (WFTDA #189; FTS #169 in WFTDA) and Pueblo Derby Devil Dollz (WFTDA #202; FTS #137 in WFTDA), but fell to Winnipeg Roller Derby League (WFTDA unranked; FTS #94 in WFTDA) by a score of 174-217. The 2-1 record was good enough to move into the single-elimination winners’ bracket. In a physically demanding game, the Muñecas lost 68-185 to the Mud River Rollers (WFTDA unranked; FTS #80 in WFTDA).

On May 16th, a number of league members spent the morning volunteering with the Albuquerque Ability Walk , a community event to celebrate all abilities. Unfortunately, the walk was canceled at the last minute due to weather, but not before many DCRD helped to set up and tear down the event.

You may have come across DCRD at the Blues, Brews and BBQ festival over Memorial Day Weekend. We have open recruitment for new members - skaters and officials - and so skaters were out making new connections in the community.

Last weekend, many of our skaters and officials traveled to Los Alamos to play in Chile Scrimmage: Red versus Green, hosted by our friends at Los Alamos Derby Dames. Green was victorious, winning 212-74. French BulldozHer brought home MVP Jammer and Sweetest Sting earned MVP Blocker for Team Green. You can read more about the event in the Los Alamos Daily Post.
